Watermaker Maintenance Guide

Daily use, periodic service and seasonal prep — Seacraft SCW series

A watermaker purifies seawater by reverse osmosis; without regular care, membrane output drops, salt builds up and mid-season failures become more likely. Our FAQ states that watermakers need periodic maintenance: filter cleaning and replacement, flush cycles, pump oil and winterisation when required.

This guide is compiled from product pages, the spare parts catalogue and location service information on this site. For flush and lay-up steps see Membrane Flush & Winterization; for part intervals see Spare Parts Replacement Schedule.

Seacraft Periodic Care (FAQ)
  • Winterisation if unused more than 4 weeks
  • HP pump oil every 250 operating hours
  • Pre-season preparation checks

Maintenance Schedule — When to Do What

The table below is a general framework based on usage intensity. Operating hours, water quality and filter condition are confirmed during a survey or service visit.

Interval Task Notes
After each production run Freshwater flush (reverse flush) Automatic or manual; reduces salt build-up in the membrane path
Regular use / weekly Pre-filter check, short flush Dirty filters load the membrane prematurely
50–200 hours or 3–6 months 5–20 µm pre-filter replacement Spare parts table
6–12 months Carbon filter replacement Spare parts table
250 operating hours High-pressure pump oil change Tracked on digital display — FAQ
Annual Filter service + membrane check Recommended on-site at marina locations
Idle more than 4 weeks Winterisation (preservative / lay-up chemical) Prevents bacterial growth inside membranes — FAQ
Season opening Pre-season preparation checks Pre-season checklist
Season closing Flush, drain, winterise End-of-season checklist
3–7 years (usage dependent) Membrane replacement TORAY / FILMTEC — FAQ, spare parts guide

Membrane life depends on flush discipline, pre-filter condition, salinity and running hours. For early performance loss see our seawater temperature & salinity guide.

Component-by-Component Care

Pre-filters

Sediment and dolomite filters trap particles before the membrane. Clogging raises pressure and reduces flow.

Listed in our spare parts catalogue. Replacement interval varies with use.

Membrane & flush

Seacraft units use TORAY and FILMTEC membranes. Freshwater flushing after production prevents salt accumulation.

SCW-30 has automatic reverse flush; many 230V models offer schedulable auto flush. Details: flush guide.

High-pressure pump

The heart of the system. Pump oil must be changed every 250 hours of use.

Visible leakage, failure to reach working pressure or unusual vibration requires inspection — high-pressure pump page.

Brine discharge line

Concentrated brine must discharge freely. Blockages raise pressure and cut output.

SCW-50 PRO includes automatic brine rejection. Brine faults can shorten membrane life — spare parts guide.

Monitoring & alarms

SCW series units offer digital displays with pressure, flow, water quality and hour tracking. Low-pressure protection shuts down if pressure is not reached within 30 seconds; high pressure above 65 bar triggers protection.

Investigate the cause before restarting after an alarm.

Winterisation

If the unit will be unused for more than 4 weeks, winterisation prevents bacterial growth inside the membranes.

Lay-up chemical is listed in the spare parts catalogue. Steps: end-of-season checklist.

In-Season Usage Tips

Flush discipline

Skipping post-production flush stresses the membrane. The same applies to 12V systems running on solar at anchor — 12V + solar panel guide. If auto flush is enabled, tune the duration to your production profile; if disabled, plan manual flushing after each run.

Run time and membrane load

Long continuous daily runs load both power and membrane. Plan a sensible operating window from your daily litre requirement — capacity guide.

Water quality monitoring

SCW-50 PRO tracks water quality on the touch panel; SCW-30 has a product-water test outlet on the remote panel. On performance loss, check pre-filters and flush first, then assess the membrane.

Modular systems

On SCW-50 PRO Modular and larger units, periodic maintenance can be carried out without shutting down the entire system — as noted on shipyard and commercial vessel location pages for operational continuity.

On-Site Service & Annual Maintenance Package

Seacraft offers on-site surveys and service at marinas along the Turkish coast. Location FAQs for Marmaris, Didim, Foça and others recommend annual filter service and membrane checks — all carried out on your yacht.

Bodrum & Göcek — winter lay-up package

Bodrum and Göcek location pages describe an annual maintenance package for wintering boats: end-of-season membrane cleaning, filter replacement and system winterisation on-site. Booking from October onwards is recommended — Bodrum, Göcek.

Spare parts supply

Local manufacturing means spare parts are usually available within the same week — watermaker spare parts catalogue. Pump oil, filters, lay-up chemical and motor components are stocked.

Service scope depends on model, operating hours and current filter condition — confirmed during a survey or service visit. Use the appointment form to book.

When to Call for Service

Symptom Likely cause First step
Noticeable flow drop Dirty pre-filter, tired membrane Filter check; replace if needed
Low-pressure alarm Air leak on intake, blocked filter, low feed pressure Check filter and intake line
High-pressure alarm (above 65 bar) Blocked brine line, valve issue Inspect brine and pressure lines
Pump oil leak / vibration Seal wear or pump damage Service — HP pump inspection
Brine rejection fault Missed flush, rejection valve Common mistakes guide

Frequently Asked Questions

Daily flush and visual filter checks can be done by the owner. Pump oil changes (250 hours), membrane testing and lay-up chemical application are best supported by the Seacraft technical team. Even with automatic operation, following maintenance instructions matters — FAQ.

Seacraft units have digital displays to monitor high-pressure operating hours. SCW-50 PRO also shows run hours on the panel. When due, order pump oil from the spare parts catalogue; application is carried out during service.

Salt from seawater builds up on the membrane surface, reducing output and shortening life. Our spare parts guide lists missed flush and dirty pre-filters among causes of early membrane failure. Optimise auto flush timing if enabled; otherwise plan freshwater rinse after each production run — flush guide.

Bodrum and Göcek pages recommend booking from October. Plan membrane cleaning, filter replacement and lay-up chemical together with the end-of-season checklist. Short idle periods under 4 weeks do not require full winterisation; longer lay-up does — FAQ.

Seacraft provides on-site service at marinas across Turkey. See Marmaris, Didim, Foça and other locations. Service scope is confirmed after a survey.
